I Come From Behind Mount Kaf
Imagination is the basis of all the visible material around us. Nothing in this world was not once imagined as an idea in the mysterious realm of the mind. Thus, the main inspiration behind this collection was this phenomenon.
In diaspora, we had a minimal idea about the ancestral land we originally come from, thus we had to rely on our imagination to create a homeland we can relate and belong to.
Although it may have been far from reality, but I managed to construct a world of my own and translate this world into artwork. I managed to gather fragments and tell a story created in my own mind.
The time I spent picturing what the homeland looks like, came from a feeling rather than an actual experience.
This feeling arises and transpires between the transitional space between day to night, from sleeping to wakefulness and between happiness and sadness. A mysterious space, which I think, is similar to Sosroqua’s words “when the world was not born, between fluidity and firmness”.
This artwork collection is an exclusive one of series, printed on silk velvet fabric. I chose this particular media to capture the feeling that made these works come to life. I aspire that the artworks can deliver to the audience a similar feeling that has accompanied me throughout my life, when i thought of the homeland. A hazy dreamy atmosphere that engages the 5 senses together.
The mechanism I follow in creating my artworks do not depend or follow a pattern. I like to believe that the artworks create themselves randomly and the characters chose to become the heroes of the work. My role is to assemble this world together and allow the elements to flow in their desired direction.
A question for me remains:
is there any reality to what I have imagined to be behind mount Kaf?
And will the homeland ever be as I have imagined it to be?
